Twitter and Professional Sports

August 5, 2009 in Crazy Stories In Sports, Football

Being from San Diego, I follow San Diego sports pretty closely. One story that is making headlines through sports is Antonio Cromartie’s $2,500 fine for knocking the food at the Charger park during training camp. Via Twitter.

This story seems funny to me. I know many professional athletes are using twitter and facebook to create a fan base, because having fans sell tickets, and selling tickets gets players paid. But teams are not quite liking the fact that players are putting butts in the seats. Chargers have actually banned tweeting from within the locker. Shawn Merriman (@shawnmerriman) posted that he found a loop hole in the agreement and he is outside the locker room.

This story has even made it to ESPN. Bill Williamson said that players need to be careful-Big brother is watching.

I really don’t understand why send a tweet is such a big deal. I understand that the teams want to maintain some form of control within their compounds, but Merriman has 40,000+ followers on twitter. Than fan base sells jerseys, tickets, and other items and keeps the organization running. To restrict it is to restrict the money flow. I understand that sports is not all about money, but if there were no fans, there would be no sports. If I owned a sport team, I would recommend my players, especially high profile ones, to get onto social networking sites and start chatting.  It creates a feel of “knowing” a pro player. It puts butts in the seat and money into the organization. Fining a player for tweeting is crazy!

Perfection in Sports

July 23, 2009 in Inspiration

Anyone that knows me knows I am a fairly big sports fan. But I am a purist fan. I hate everything that goes on with steroids and drug scandals and such. I think if you need to use drugs to enhance your performance, you are out of your league trying to play pro sports.

Every so often, a story will come in sports that lifts your spirits. Today,White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle threw MLB’s 18th perfect game in major league history. He was flawless. Out of the 27 people he face-he record 27 outs. He had big help from his team.

And then he recorded the final out and the celebration got under way. Watch his reaction. Watch his team. Listen to the announcer. You soon realize what perfection truly means in sports:

Will we ever see a perfect game again? Probably. But every single time it happens, it is a site to be seen. In a world that is marred by imperfections, you still are able to get a glimpse at what perfection looks like. Congrats Buerhle.

Stealing Ideas From Soccer?

June 13, 2009 in Soccer (futbol), Uncategorized

In an article by MSN, Sports writer Kevin Hench talks about how professional sports should take a look at Soccer and steal some ideas.

The article states that player transfers, in season tournaments and regulations are three things that other sports should steal.

But there was another comment that irked me a bit in the article. Hench writes: “They can keep their 0-0 draws and constant offsides flags, but the transfer market, in-season tournaments and relegation are three ideas worth stealing.”

I am a huge soccer fan. And I like the article for the most part because Soccer is a well design sport. And I completely agree with taking the transfers, mid-season tourney and regulations into other sports. But the part of where “They can keep their 0-0 draws and constant offside flags” pissed me off.

Mr. Hench, are you trying to tell me that 11 guys battling 11 other guys for 90 minutes only to result in no points is a bad game? Some of the most exciting games I have ever seen have been 0-0 draws. Would you rather see cames that goes into the 100+ points like basebasketball? I would have like to been in that conversation:

Mr. Basketball: “Let’s start a sport, but just to have the players feel good about themselves, let’s give them 2 points per score!”

Mr. Football: “2? Ha! Let’s give them 7!”

And those offsides call? It is called pushing the envelope. It is called trying to see how far you can go without breaking the rules. It is called strategy. It is called technique. And other sports should look into.

Mr. Hench, I agree that other sports should follow Soccer. Soccer is a world wide sport in all aspects of the game. So next time you try to write an article about soccer, I recommend watching a game first before you try to write about it.

Michael Vick: The Story Continues On

May 20, 2009 in NFL, Sport History

The saga of Michael Vick continues. Following a 21 month prison sentences and consequently, 2 seasons off from Football, Michael Vick is released from prison to go under house arrest. His expected release day is mid-July.

Vick took a full time construction job to make a few extra bucks to pay back some money (he filed for bankruptcy a few months back).

So now the question comes down to this: Will M. Vick play again in the NFL?

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has said that Vick needs to do more than just apologize. He truly needs to regret what he has done.

Former Colt’s coach Tony Dungee visited Vick in prison and said that Vick has changed and wants another shot.

So what do you think? Not only if you WANT him to play in the NFL again, but CAN he play in the NFL again?

Here is my take on it:
Michael Vick has done some terrible things in his life, who hasn’t? I would bet that there are some other professional athletes who have done worse things than Vick and not been caught. Vick got caught, and service his punishment till the end. He never once pulled a Paris Hilton and cried his way back home, or use his star power to weasel out of prison. He took his punishment and faced the consequences. To me, when his time is fully up, he is just as much of a free man as you or I. He should be reinstated to the NFL and get the chance to play, if he can hack it.

Can he physically play in the NFL? I highly doubt it. It is hard to think that, even an athlete of his caliper, can take 2 years off and not miss a beat. He was a great quarterback when it came to scrambling and moving, but his arm was already sub par at best. I personally think, if he was to get reinstated, he would not be able to comeback full swing. He will not be able to help any NFL team and his comeback will be nothing more than a one time story on SportCenter.

But I truly hope that Vick gets the chance to prove me wrong.

Good Luck Michael Vick. You still have a long road ahead.
